Creative Connections: Charleston Artist Retreat

Strength in Numbers: Building an Artistic Community

Artists and creatives (including calligraphers) often work in solitude, tucked away in their studios and pouring their hearts into their work. I am comfortable in my own environment, creating hand engraved and calligraphed details for brands and brides.

But beneath the surface of a creative’s solo work lies a truth that we all know: connection is crucial among creatives.

It’s not just about sharing ideas or collaborating on projects.

It’s about being part of a community that understands your struggles, celebrates your wins, and inspires you to keep pushing boundaries. I found this connection in Charleston, South Carolina, with a group of creative women entrepreneurs brought together by The Founders Society.

I had the incredible opportunity to attend a retreat in the lowcountry—a unique, vibrant environment along the coast of South Carolina. This gathering was set in a cozy (and stunning!) Airbnb near downtown, offering the perfect backdrop for inspiration and community.

First things first, this retreat was made possible by Hayley and Meg, the creative duo behind The Founders Society. Their mission is to bring women creatives together, providing a platform for collaboration and support.

The process started with an application (yes, I was nervous!) and only a select few were accepted to attend. I knew the event would be an exclusive opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.

One of the most memorable aspects was meeting successful and driven women with similar goals as my own. As one of twenty entrepreneurial women, I made connections with artists and creatives from all over the country. Everyone brought unique skills and perspectives to the table from a variety of backgrounds and professions:

  • Painters
  • Muralists
  • Photographers
  • Marketing gurus
  • Party planners
  • Floral preservationists
  • And lots of women with multiple talents!

We even had the chance to visit two brick-and-mortar storefronts owned by members of our group.

🕯️ Kristen, from The Charleston Candle Company, guided us through creating our own custom candles with a private shopping experience in her beautiful and bright downtown-Charleston storefront.

👑 Another inspiring founder, Mimi, also hosted a delightful sip-and-shop at her downtown storefront The Tiny Tassel – your go-to shop for colorful jewelry and fun accessories.

Building Meaningful Connections

Connecting with other artists who share similar experiences—both challenges and victories—was a transformative experience.

Just a few to note: I met a wedding painter from Louisiana, a fine art painter from Texas, a floral preservation artist from Atlanta, and a Supper Club leader from South Carolina. The entire group was a mix of talents and successful business owners!

Bouncing ideas off each other and learning from our diverse experiences created a vibrant energy that was both motivating and comforting.

At one point, we even shared a quick TED Talk on our of our own skills. I shared the power of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, for idea generation, thought leadership, and content development.

💻 Artists can be intimidated or uncomfortable with new technology, and I really hope that the others will utilize the tool to help save time on content planning and leave more time for creating (our favorite!).

Staying in a shared room with three other members led to deeper conversations and closer relationships. We gathered on the covered porch for breakfast, walked to local coffee shops, held a book swap, shared our experiences and dreams, got cozy in the living room to explore each other's strengths, and ventured out to brunch to celebrate our shared journeys.

Don’t forget the nights in with dinners provided by Hayley and Meg. *chef’s kiss*

The Power of Community

I was pretty nervous to go alone without knowing other creatives there, but The Founders Society retreat taught me that creative connections can lift you up in ways you can’t achieve alone. Every night, we held reflections to discover our "True North"—the guiding principles that drive our businesses and artistic endeavors. Knowing that there is a community of supportive creatives, cheering you on and inspiring you, is a connection you simply can't find in your own studio.

In an industry where competition can be fierce, it was refreshing to be part of a group that prioritized collaboration and support over rivalry. Together, we built a network of like-minded individuals, ready to uplift and empower one another.

Embrace the Power of Connection

As an artist (calligraphy and engraving are 100% an art form), it’s easy to get lost in the isolation of your work. Stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the power of connection can transform your creative journey. Whether it’s attending a retreat, joining a local artist group, or simply reaching out to fellow creatives online, building an artistic community is an investment in your growth and success.

If you’re in the Macon or Atlanta area, here’s a list of groups, studios, and communities I recommend that will inspire you, provide opportunities, and overall help you grow your creative endeavors:

So, if you ever find yourself stuck or uninspired, remember that there’s strength in numbers. Seek out those connections, embrace the support of your fellow artists, and watch as your creative spirit flourishes.

I have a new group of friends who are willing to share experiences, happy to answer questions, and provide unparalleled support. I hope they know I’m their cheerleader, too.
